Introduction to Geospatial Data

Overview

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, students will:

  • Define, in their own words, what geospatial data is
  • Apply basic geographic techniques to geospatial data
  • Demonstrate best practices for geospatial data

Course Overview

Day 1: Understanding GIS Basic Concepts
Day 2: Introduction to Geospatial Tools: Geoplatform.gov
Day 3: Introduction to Geospatial Tools: ArcGIS
Day 4: How GIS is Changing the World: Group Project
Day 5: Bringing it all Together

10:10 AM Hands-on Activity: How to use Excel for geospatial data analysis and visualization.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the following concepts: acquiring spatial data, pre-and post-processing of spatial data, using Excel to visually represent spatial data.

Students will be given instructions to acquire geospatial data for the state of Indiana. They can choose any aspect of interest that include (but is not limited to): agricultural, census, medical, educational, socio-economic, business, entertainment, etc. and use geospatial tools to visualize the data. Students will create a short story supported by their visualization.
